Nursing schools in the United States are trying to explore ways in order to increase the number of students that are interested in the nursing profession. It is estimated that United States would need more than one million nurses by the year 2016. This fact was projected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hence, it is indeed a challenge for US how they can come up with this number of future nurses without compromising the quality of nursing care each nurse can provide. Since there has been an increasing older population, aside from hospital nurses, a great deal of nurses would be needed in the nursing homes in order to care for the elderly patients. And one of the new ways to aide this increasing demand is through the accelerated degree program for non-nursing graduates. This program has started to gain momentum in the different parts of the United States since it offers baccalaureate and masteral degrees.

For those students who had former degrees and who would wish to shift to the field of nursing, the fastest possible way possible is through the accelerated nursing programs. This program has been started since the year 1990 with 31 accelerated baccalaureate programs (BSN) and 12 generic master’s programs (MSN). And currently, this program has now 205 accelerated BSN and 56 master’s programs that offers to the student. This accelerated nursing program can be taken for almost 12-18 months only in comparison to the traditional nursing program, which takes for 3-4 years to complete.
